Renting a car in Sydney on an overseas licence
Many people who rent a car in Sydney for weeks or months hold a licence issued overseas. NSW limits how long you may drive on it, and the limit depends on your visa. This guide summarises the NSW Government rules as published in October 2026. Check the official pages linked below before you rely on them, because rules change.
Temporary visa holders
If you are a temporary overseas visitor, the NSW Government says you can drive in NSW on your current overseas licence for up to six months while you remain a visitor.
If you arrived on or after 1 July 2023 and plan to live in NSW for more than six months, you need a NSW licence within six months to keep driving. After that point, driving on the overseas licence counts as driving unlicensed.
Permanent residents
If you are a permanent resident, you can drive on a current overseas licence for up to three months from the date you arrive in Australia. To keep driving after that, you need a NSW licence within those three months.
What you must carry
When you drive on an overseas licence in NSW you must:
- Hold a current overseas licence and carry it with you.
- Carry an English translation or an International Driving Permit if the licence is not in English.
- Be able to show police that you are a visitor if asked.
What this means for a rental
The time limit runs from your arrival or your visitor status, not from the day the rental starts. A six-month rental that begins four months after you arrive may run past the date you are allowed to drive on your overseas licence.
When you enquire, tell us your visa type, your arrival date and where your licence was issued. We check that the rental period fits inside the time you are allowed to drive, and if it does not, we talk through a shorter period or what changes once you hold a NSW licence.
Rideshare needs an Australian licence
These rules cover driving a private car. To drive rideshare in NSW, such as Uber or DiDi, the Point to Point Transport Commission requires an unrestricted Australian driver licence, so an overseas licence does not qualify. Our guide to renting a car for Uber explains the rideshare rules.
