Renting a car to drive Uber or DiDi in Sydney

Renting a car is a common way to start driving rideshare in Sydney without buying a car. NSW sets rules for drivers and vehicles that provide booked passenger services, and Uber and DiDi add rules of their own. This guide summarises those rules as published in October 2026, with links to the official pages. Rules change, so check the sources before you rely on them.

What NSW requires of rideshare drivers

The NSW Point to Point Transport Commission sets the driver rules, and booking service providers such as Uber and DiDi must check that their drivers meet them. In summary, you need:

  • An unrestricted Australian driver licence, not a learner or provisional licence. An overseas licence does not qualify.
  • To have held that licence for at least 12 months within a set recent period. The period has changed over time, so check the current rule with your platform.
  • To meet the medical standards for commercial vehicle drivers.
  • No disqualifying offences on your record.

If your licence is from overseas or interstate

You can drive a private car in NSW on an overseas licence for a limited time, but that licence does not qualify you to drive rideshare. The Commission says the licence must be an unrestricted Australian licence. If you hold an interstate licence and live in NSW, you may need to get a NSW licence within three months. Our guide to driving in NSW on an overseas licence covers the general rules.

What NSW requires of the car

The vehicle rules mostly fall on the car's owner. For a rental car, that is the rental company. According to the Commission:

  • Rideshare cars need an annual safety check, previously called a pink slip, even if they are under five years old.
  • The car must be kept registered, safe and serviced to the manufacturer's schedule by a licensed mechanic, with records kept.
  • The car must display a booked service sign at the rear on the driver's side.
  • The car needs third-party property insurance of at least $5 million as well as CTP, with no gaps in cover.

What Uber and DiDi ask of the car

For UberX in Sydney, Uber says the car must be 15 years old or less, have 4 doors, seat 4 to 7 passengers plus the driver, be ANCAP 5-star rated, pass a pink slip inspection and be registered and CTP-insured in NSW. Uber says some rental vehicles may be eligible, and that you must be listed on the car's property damage insurance policy.

DiDi says Sydney vehicles must be no more than 15 years old, have at least 4 doors, be registered in NSW with CTP plus third-party or comprehensive insurance, and that the driver must be listed as the insured driver.

Who pays the passenger service levy

NSW charges a passenger service levy on each rideshare trip. The Commission says it is paid by the booking service provider, such as Uber or DiDi, not by the driver or the car's owner.

Questions to ask a rental company

Ask for the answers in writing before you pay anything:

  • Does the rental allow rideshare use, and for which platforms?
  • Will I be named on the insurance as Uber or DiDi require, and what is the excess?
  • Does the car meet the platform's age, door and safety rating rules?
  • Is the annual safety check current, and does the car have the booked service sign?
  • What is the weekly rate, the bond and any kilometre allowance?
  • Who pays for servicing, tyres and repairs, and what happens if the car is off the road?

Delivery work is different

Food delivery does not carry passengers, so the point to point rules for rideshare drivers and cars do not apply in the same way. Delivery platforms set their own requirements. DoorDash, for example, says Dashers must be 18 or older and hold an ABN. Our delivery car rental page covers what Uber asks of cars used for Uber Eats.
