Renting a car while yours is being repaired
A car in the workshop rarely comes back on the day first promised. Parts are delayed, assessments take time, and extra damage is found once panels come off. Planning the rental around that uncertainty saves money and stress.
Start with a week, then extend
Unless the workshop has given you a firm date, rent for the first week and ask to extend as the repair progresses. Tell the rental company at the start that the end date may move, and ask early if you need more time, because extensions depend on whether the car is booked afterwards.
Ask about cover before you rent
If the accident was not your fault, the other driver's insurer may pay for a replacement car. Your own policy may also include hire car cover. Each insurer sets its own conditions, such as a daily limit, a maximum number of days or a similar class of car. Ask the insurer what they will pay for, in writing, before the rental starts.
Keep the paperwork
Keep a copy of the rental agreement, the dates, the daily or weekly rate and every invoice. Insurers usually ask for these to reimburse a claim. Note the workshop's estimated completion date and any updates, so the length of the rental can be explained.
Choose a car that fits how you use yours
If you carry children, tools or a team, choose a car with the seats and space you need. A replacement car only helps if it does the jobs your own car did.
